The 50 State Rescue Challenge: Indiana Edition

At Cause for Paws, we’re on a mission:

Get a pet adopted in every state.

This week’s spotlight falls on The Hoosier State: Indiana and IndyHumane.

IndyHumane, originally founded as the Humane Society of Indianapolis in 1905, began by helping both animals and victims of domestic abuse. As the organization grew, it expanded its properties across Indianapolis before consolidating operations in 1965 at a small farm on 79th Street and Michigan Road.

Initially, the farm housed various animals, including dogs, cats, horses, and donkeys. However, by the late 1980s, the focus shifted primarily to domesticated pets due to changes in animal welfare laws and urban development.

In response to growing needs, a new shelter was constructed between 1989 and 1991, capable of housing 300 dogs, cats, and small mammals. This facility opened to great community support.Recognizing the need for enhanced medical care for shelter pets, IndyHumane later added the 12,000-square-foot Downtown Clinic. This expansion, created with the help of Halstead Architects, has allowed the organization to provide more comprehensive services to animals and pet owners throughout Indianapolis.

Throughout its history, IndyHumane has continuously adapted to meet the changing needs of animals and the community, evolving from a multi-purpose welfare organization to a specialized companion animal shelter and medical care provider.
